What sort of a shooter are you? To what level have you advanced? The choices (Choke selections) we make will always have a built in percentage of lost targets associated with them. The tighter the pattern thrown the lower those percentages go. Full choke at 10 yards with 1 1/8th oz # 9 won't have very many clays slipping through. Cylinder at 40 yards with 1 oz of 7 1/2's will have almost all of them slipping through. What percentage will you allow to slip through your pattern to give yourself more margin for error in your pointing?

If you are just starting out and breaking 50 % then a choke that gives up 20% of  the birds for more forgiveness on mis-pointing can still be a winner for you. As you progress and you start turning in those higher scores, you will develop less of a tolerance for giving up the birds you did not miss and less interest in credit for the ones you actually did miss that the choke found for you.

The best information I know of indicates a need for about 300 pellets in a 30" circle to give a person > 99 % chance of breaking an edge on straight away target (They are the worst case).

The maximum yardage where you still have 300 pellets in your 30" circle can then be thought of as the "Range" for each of your chokes.
